Secondary Education
There are three components present within the secondary education program. They are the curriculum, instruction and field experience/assessment. The curriculum includes general education and introduction to the profession, professional studies and content preparation, and integrated studies for initial teacher preparation. Instruction consists of strategies, approaches, and experiences connected to evidence-based research. Assessment includes continuous self-examination and reflection, an education portfolio, and formal measurement of academic achievement.
The teaching preparation program for Secondary Education, grades 5-12, is organized into three steps. Each step is connected throught the conceptual framework characterized by the themes of Scholarship, Mission, and Competence, and which emphasizes teacher reflection and multicultural education. In addition, ongoing field experience/practicum placements that connect theory and practice, and the education portfolio are integral to the course of studies.
As a person seeking Secondary licensing you will develop and submit for evaluation artifacts contributing to the Education Portfolio during your course of study. A submission involves making an oral presentation about the contents of your portfolio to selected professors and peers.
