March 30, 2009 (Notre Dame, Ind.) – The Saint Mary’s College Department of Athletics and Recreation has announced that Toni Kuschel will take over the reins as the head coach of the varsity volleyball program at the College.

The Minnesota native has most recently served as the Junior Olympic volleyball coach for the North Country Region as well as the assistant volleyball coach at Mesabi Community College in Virginia, Minn. She has more than five years of coaching experience at the high school, Junior Olympic, and collegiate levels.

Kuschel also brings a wealth of sports management and administration experience to Saint Mary’s. She has spent the past two and a half years as the sports director at the Mesabi Family YMCA, also in Virginia, Minn. She has served in various administrative capacities including assistant athletic director at Brainerd High School and assistant intramural coordinator at Central Lakes College, both in Brainerd, Minn. She also recreation program director at RecKids Spring Break Camp located in St. Cloud, Minn.

She will replace Julie Schroeder-Biek as the head coach of the program as Schroeder-Biek accepted the position of athletic director at the College last fall.

“We are very excited for Toni to come on board and become a part of our department,” Schroeder-Biek commented. “She has a true passion for coaching and will bring great energy to the program!”

Kuschel is a 2002 graduate of Central Lakes College where she competed in both volleyball and softball while earning an associate’s degree. She then went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in recreation and sport management from St. Cloud State University in 2005.

Kuschel will begin August 1.
