Each of the eight varsity athletic teams annually performs an on-campus and off-campus service project.  Teams have chosen a variety of projects over the past several years.  Reading for an elementary school class, serving dinner at the South Bend Center for the Homeless, and raising money for and participating in Light the Night events are just a few examples of projects that Saint Mary's teams have been a part of in the past.

Take a look at what Belles varsity athletes have done to help serve the College and local community!

Basketball

   St. Margaret's House Donations

Our team has been collecting shampoo, conditioner, and soaps from the hotels that we stay at when traveling. We donated all of these products to St. Margaret's House!

   Special Olympics Basketball Clinic

The Saint Mary's Basketball and Golf teams volunteered with the Notre Dame Special Olympics Chapter to run a basketball open gym. Only a few athletes attended, but that meant that each athlete received a great amount of attention to work on his or her skills. We stretched and warmed up together then proceeded to help with dribbling and shooting skills. When time was almost up, the entire group played a game of knock out and one of the female athletes won! They were all wonderful and we enjoyed our time with them as we hope they did with us.

   Christmas Adopt-A-Family Assistance

At Christmas time our team collected money and went shopping for a family in need. We adopted a little boy from this family and tried to make his holiday more special. We enjoyed giving him the opportunity to have gifts to open on Christmas morning!

Cross Country

   Trail Clean Up

Over Fall Break, we cleaned up trash along Angela Rd., 933, and the Toll Road. We spent an hour collecting trash and recycling items left along the roadways in order to make the area surrounding Saint Mary’s more aesthetically pleasing and environmentally healthy.

12 Days of Christmas Gift Wrapping

On Friday, December 6, we helped wrap gifts for local families in cooperation with the OSCE office. We wrapped gifts for three different families and had a great time spending time with each other while helping those in need!

Golf

   St. Margaret's House Walk

On February 16, 2014, the Saint Mary's Golf Team participated in The Winter Walk for St. Margaret's House in South Bend. The team walked "a mile in her shoes" to raise money which benefits St. Margaret's House. This year the team raised more than $300. All of the money goes towards the center which helps the women and children of South Bend to create a better life for themselves by providing food, clothing, as well as assisting them in learning new skills.

   Special Olympics Basketball Open Gym

The Saint Mary's Basketball and Golf teams volunteered with the Notre Dame Special Olympics Chapter to run a basketball open gym. Only a few athletes attended, but that meant that each athlete received a great amount of attention to work on his or her skills. We stretched and warmed up together then proceeded to help with dribbling and shooting skills. When time was almost up, the entire group played a game of knock out and one of the female athletes won! They were all wonderful and we enjoyed our time with them as we hope they did with us.

   Adopt a Family

This year for Christmas the Saint Mary's Golf team adopted a young girl. The team went shopping and bought a variety of gifts from board games to ballet accessories. Together we wrapped all of our gifts and then sent them off to the family!

Lacrosse

Be a Santa to a Senior

For the first service for project of the year the lacrosse team participated in a gift-wrapping project. This project was called “Be a Santa to a Senior” for the Home Instead Senior Care. For this project we met at one of their locations and wrapped many gifts for the Seniors. The living facility was welcoming and provided treats for us while we served. We wrapped gifts for nearly an hour and met remarkable people in the process. The feeling that this gave to us was incredible and we decided to make it an annual event for the lacrosse team. The opportunity to participate in this was found by our Coach, Amy Long. We are fortunate that this was the service we decided to complete and would recommend for anyone looking for service to try this. Items packed were music, lotions, clothing items, etc.

   Hannah and Friends

On Saturday March 8, 2014 the Saint Mary's lacrosse team volunteered at Hannah and Friends. The team embraced their inner Fairy Godmothers at the annual prom dress pick extravaganza. The girls assisted Hannah's residence in choosing ball gowns to wear for their future dance. Fun was had by all at a dress up photo booth, and each participant was able to walk away feeling like a princess.

Soccer

   LOGAN Center Candy Cane Hunt

On December 7th, the Soccer Team went to the LOGAN Center to volunteer for their Candy Cane Hunt. When we arrived, each of us took a handful of candy canes and hid them in a few rooms around the LOGAN Center; we also set up the snacks and decorated the room. As the kids started to arrive, we spread ourselves out among the tables and talked with the kids until everyone was there. Once everyone was there we went and searched for the candy canes with the kids, helping them if they needed it. After all the candy canes were gone, we gathered back together and had some snacks and hot chocolate. We had a lot of fun with the kids and we hope they enjoyed it as much as we did!

Softball

   Little Flower Craft Show

On November 7, 2013 the Saint Mary’s Softball Team took time out of their schedules and went to the Little Flower Catholic Church in South Bend, Indiana for a community service event. Little Flower hosts an annual craft show where many activities such as a bake sale, raffles, and a food pantry drive take place. The softbelles participated in some of the preparation of the cookies that are to be sold off during the bake sale. The softball team decorated the sugar cookies going to be sold off. The Softbelles loved the idea of giving back and loved decorating delicious cookies even more. The money raised from the cookie sales go directly to the food pantry to help serve the needs of those in South Bend/ Michiana community who are less fortunate.

   LOGAN Center Dance Party

On November 16th, 2013, the Softbelles participated in yet another community service event. This event took place at the Logan Center in South Bend, IN. The event was open to adult members of the center for an all out dance party. The Softbelles enjoyed dancing and making friends with the members as well as getting to show off their moves. The Softbelles team danced longer than they had anticipated and had a blast doing so. The softball team enjoyed every song and every second of the dance. They took away many new friendships as well as new dance moves.

   St. Margaret's House Winter Walk

On February 16th, the Saint Mary's Softbelles participated in a mile long walk to benefit the women and children of St. Margaret's House in downtown South Bend. "Winter Walk" raises funds for St. Margaret's House, which is a day center that works to improve the lives of women who struggle with economic poverty. We began at the County City Building and circled around downtown South Bend, ending at St. Margaret's House where we were able to tour the building and hear from some of the incredible individuals whose continuous efforts and dedication help make St. Margaret's House possible. It was a humbling experience for all of us and it was inspiring to be involved in the cause!

Tennis

Down Syndrome Family Support and Advocacy Group Walk

On October 12, 2013 on a nice, balmy, sunny morning the Saint Mary’s Tennis team took a walk. We walked for the Down Syndrome Family Support and Advocacy Group (DSFSAG). This is a non-profit 501c3 organization that was started by parents in the 1980’s. The mission of this group is to help improve the people affected with Down syndrome and their families and friends. A few of the funds for the organization include educational/medical mini grants, recreational support, library tools, welcome bags, family support group meetings, educational scholarship, research, hospital bags, mom’s night out, etc.

The Saint Mary’s Tennis team initially arrived at the location of the walk and went into a big, arena like place and walked inside there for a while. There were many stands that were raising money for people with Down syndrome. One of the stands was “Hannah and Friends”, another non-profit organization to raise awareness for people with Down syndrome. This stand was run by two Saint Mary’s girls, so it was nice to see some fellow classmates help run the event. There was a medical dog in the area too, that was helping raise awareness, a couple teammates and I got a picture with the dog. After being inside, we finally started the walk. The tennis team proudly marched on with all of the people until the end. They served food and drinks for everyone involved. It is always great to work hard on the tennis court to help the team, but to participate in a service project to help others is what it’s all about.

   Christmas Cookie Decorating

For our service project we went and decorated Christmas cookies. Doing this helped bring the team closer together because we were decorating these cookies for other people. It also helped us get into the Christmas spirit and how during that time it is good to give back to other people. The helpers that were there doing this with us, said repeatedly how grateful they were that we were doing this and were amazed at how many cookies we decorated!

Volleyball

   First Year Move-In

The Saint Mary’s volleyball team's enthusiasm was contagious to fellow freshmen Belles moving into McCandless Hall! The volleyball team had a long week of practice, but continued their hard work while lifting up boxes, bags, futons, and TVs. The freshmen and their families were so appreciative of the Belles’ spirits and helpful demeanor, as well as the VolleyBelles were happy to welcome and get to know the first year students! The ladies on the volleyball team perform this act of service annually. All in all, it was a great day on campus to be a Belle.

   Dig 4 the 1

On November 1st, 2013, the volleyball team hosted Adrian College in their first annual Dig 4 the 1 match to raise awareness for domestic violence and sexual assault. They raised $672.97 and donated it to the South Bend Justice Center. Pairing up with BAVO, SGA, SDB, and SAAC, they sold t-shirts and had domestic violence statistics hanging in the gym to help raise awareness. It was nice to be supported by much of the student body, professors, and many community members for such a great turnout. The Belles beat Adrian in five sets to secure their spot in the conference tournament.
