2015-16 Team Service Projects
Each of the eight varsity athletic teams annually performs an on-campus and off-campus service project. Teams have chosen a variety of projects over the past several years. Reading for an elementary school class, serving dinner at the South Bend Center for the Homeless, and raising money for and participating in Light the Night events are just a few examples of projects that Saint Mary's teams have been a part of in the past.
Take a look at what Belles varsity athletes have done to help serve the College and local community!
The basketball team has been hanging out with our Team Impact player, Bryanna. She has come to a few volleyball games so far and even got to eat in the dining hall with us before one of the games. We also went to Hannah and Friends for her music and rhythm class where the team danced with Bry and other kids. We have had a blast with her and love having her be part of our Saint Mary’s community. We can’t wait for season so we can spend even more time with her!
St. Margaret's House
The Saint Mary's College Basketball team collected toiletries over our four overnights trips throughout the season for the women at St. Margaret's House to go towards our community service.
Hannah and Friends
On Monday, October 19th, we volunteered at Hannah and Friends during their fitness class. We helped a small group of residents practice some gymnastics skills! We also participated in a group stretching activity and Zumba. It was a great experience and we helped build some solid relationships between ourselves and the residents. As always, Hannah and Friends is a great opportunity and we love volunteering there!
St. Margaret's House
On Wednesday, October 21st, we volunteered at Saint Margaret's House in downtown South Bend. We divided and conquered into groups doing things such as sorting clothes and donations and going to the food bank and transporting food to the fridges and pantry. This was our first time volunteering at Saint Margaret's House, but I does not seem like it will be our last!
Student Activities Board Winter Wonderland
On December 5, we volunteered at Saint Mary's Student Activities Board's Winter Wonderland event. We were separated into two shifts and worked in the basement of the student center with crafts! The Winter Wonderland event was from 12pm-2pm and was open to the South Bend community and the children of faculty at Saint Mary's. We all had a blast and were so excited to have helped out.
Hannah and Friends
The golf team went to Hannah and Friends on Friday, December 4 from 5:30pm-7:30pm. We cheered on our friends as they sang karaoke songs, and danced to the tunes. We shared pizza and some fun stories. Most of the girls loved it and even asked me if we could do another event there, so I say it was a success.
Little Flower Bake Sale Cookie Decorating
On November 5th, the Lacrosse team went to Little Flower Church and participated in cookie decorating for the church's bake sale! We worked alongside soccer, but as a team. It was loads of fun (see attachments) and the bake sale cookies were made by Cindy (one of our own nurses from Women's Health!) and her friends. Overall we all decorated a couple hundred cookies!
Jr. Irish Soccer Academy
Since the soccer team is using the Jr. Irish Airport Soccer fields this season, we decided that it would be a good idea to extend a helping hand to Jr. Irish and volunteer with them in their soccer academy on Friday nights. Jr. Irish coaches run a program for the recreational league in South Bend, where the teams are able to come to the Jr. Irish fields on Fridays from 5:30-6:30 and go through a practice run by Jr. Irish coaches. This not only gives the players a new opportunity to learn more about the game, but it also provides coaches with the chance to learn some drills that they can utilize for the rest of the season. The SoccerBelles split up among the 8 fields and helped the Jr. Irish coaches in any way that we could; whether it was doing the drills with the players or officiating small-sided scrimmages, we all had a lot of fun! It was a great opportunity for us to help out in any way we could to show our gratitude to Jr. Irish for letting us use their fields, and we loved teaching kids more about the game we love!
Mary Frank Elementary School Reading
On Thursday, October 22, the SoccerBelles went to Mary Frank Elementary in Granger, Indiana to read and spend some time with the students there. We were split up among two kindergarten classes and two first grade classes. The teachers involved us in a lot of the classroom activities and asked us to all read a few books to some of the students in each class. The kids all seemed to love having us there and we all had a lot of fun getting to know them, too! The teachers all seemed very grateful to have us there to help out and we all agreed that the kids seemed really excited for us to be there and to be playing with them and talking to them about what they’re being for Halloween and about what they’re learning in school. We had a great time spending time in the classrooms and is one of our many memories from Fall Break!
Hannah and Friends Karaoke Night
On Friday, October 9, the softball team travelled together to Hannah and Friend's for Karaoke Night. It was a great evening of singing, dancing, and pizza. The softball team together with faculty advisor, Professor Sanchez, spent the night cheering on Hannah and Friend's residents as they sang their hearts out to their favorite tunes. We even had some of our own players grab the mic for a song or too! There were no sad faces in the building for the entire three hours that we were there. We made some new friendships while rekindling with some of the Hannah and Friend's residents who we had met last year. It was an awesome, rewarding experience for both of the involved parties. The softball team was happy to work with Hannah and Friend's as it is a great establishment. We look forward to working with them in the future.
Little Flower Bake Sale Cookie Decorating
On November 5, the tennis team went to Little Flower Church. We all helped frost and decorate Christmas cookies for the parish along with Saint Mary's lacrosse team. It was a great time, and we hope to do it again next year!
Hannah and Friends Tennis Event
Tennis had a service event with Hannah and Friends at the South Bend Racquet Club on Saturday, February 6th. The event was for "Serving Up an Ace for Awareness and Compassion". Together we did drills to practice volleys, backhands and forehands. After we finished warming up with the participants the Round Robin tournament started. It was a lot of fun and was a great experience with not only the Hannah and Friends residents but with other individuals from the community as well. We cannot wait to participate in this event again next year!
Over our fall break, the volleyball team went to Healthwin Specialized Care to spend the evening with the residents there. We spent time talking to the residents during dinner. After that, we gave some of the residents manicures. We also spent time working on various puzzles with them. We made a lot of new friends, and we got to enjoy hearing many stories.
Domestic Violence Awareness Match
Since October is Domestic Violence Awareness month, the volleyball team and BAVO paired up to hold an annual domestic violence awareness match on October 27th, 2015 against Olivet College. The purpose of this match was help raise awareness of domestic violence. Lexi Grady, a member of the volleyball team, helped put together a video of student athletes promoting awareness, which can be seen on the Saint Mary's College Athletics and the Saint Mary's College Belles Volleyball Facebook pages. We encouraged fans to participate in the event by wearing purple to show support for the cause, as well as the victims of domestic violence. We ended up having over 300 people come out to support!
Recently, The Saint Mary's College volleyball team has gained a new member, Melody Blower. She is a 6th grader at Clay Middle School. She officially signed to be our Team Impact Player on Feb. 10 at halftime of the Saint Mary's basketball game. On signing day, the stands were full of fans holding signs for Mel. The support from the other athletic teams, and the rest of the student body, really helped show Mel how excited we are to have her as a Belle! We can't wait to spend some more time with her!
