SMC vs. Bethel
Belles Earn 2-1 Win over Pilots
NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The Saint Mary's College soccer team earned a 2-1 win over cross-town rival Bethel College on Friday night.
With both teams playing a close first half, the Belles broke through for the game's first goal less than three minutes before the half. Colleen Ferguson had a good look at goal from the right side of the box and fired a shot on goal. After Bethel's Elyse Powell made a diving save to divert Ferguson's shot on goal, the save deflected off of Powell directly to a wide open Alexa Ahern and the freshman punched the ball into the back of the net for the first goal of her collegiate career.
The Belles would break through for another goal in the 74th minute of play. Corissa Hart found the ball at her feet outside of the 18 yard box after a corner kick by Keely Noonan. The junior fired a shot from the left side of the box to the upper 90 on the right side of the goal for her first goal of the season, which also turned out to be the game-winning goal.
Applying some pressure late in the game, Bethel cut the lead in half with a goal by Amber Spencer in the 82nd minute. The Belles, however, were able to maintain possession of the ball down the stretch and held on for the 2-1 win.
Patty Duffy had five saves in 45 minutes of play before Adele Bruggeman notched a pair of saves of her own in the second half.
The Belles, who improved upon their win total from last season, will take to the pitch again tomorrow against Marian University (Ind.) for a 2:00 p.m. contest.
