Belles Battle in 1-0 Loss to Calvin

Box Score

NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The Saint Mary's College soccer team battled conference foe Calvin as well as the elements in a 1-0 loss on Tuesday afternoon.

With blistering winds and rain that fluctuated between mist and heavier showers, the Belles were able to dig down on defense against the Knights throughout the afternoon.  Goalkeeper Patty Duffy and her teammates were able to stifle the potent Calvin offense.  Duffy notched five saves, including a punch over the crossbar, to keep the Knights off the scoreboard in the opening half and keep the game scoreless at the midway break.

In the second half, the Belles continued their solid defense until the Knights made a strong offensive play in the 60th minute to get what proved to be the game-winning goal.  In the closing seconds of the 60th minute of the game, Lauren Heyboer served a ball from the left side of the field into the 18 yard box.  On the receiving end of the pass was Carly Prins, who elevated to get a head on the ball and sent it inside the far right post for the Calvin goal.

The Belles' defense was able to keep the Calvin offense quiet for the remainder of the contest.  The Belles were also able to put together a handful of offensive opportunities of their own, but were unable to translate those chances onto the scoreboard.

Patty Duffy finished the game with eight saves in goal as the Saint Mary's defense helped keep less than half of Calvin's shots on goal.

The Belles will next host the Alma College Scots on Saturday for another MIAA contest, which will begin at noon.
