SMC vs. Elmhurst
Belles Bounced by Bluejays
NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The Saint Mary's soccer team suffered a setback on a chilly fall Wednesday afternoon as visiting Elmhurst took a 3-1 win over the Belles.
The Bluejays scored first on a shot from just outside the 18 yard box in the 20th minute of the game. The Belles locked down on defense the rest of the first half and kept the contest 1-0 at the half.
In the second half, Elmhurst would get the eventual game-winner in the 50th minute on a poke inside the far post off of a cross from the left side of the field. Not long after the Bluejays' second goal, the Belles broke through to cut the lead to 2-1 when Katy Durkin battled for possession on a scramble in the box and netted her 10th career goal in the 56th minute.
The Belles had a couple of chances to net the equalizer, but the bounces would not fall their way as a pair of shots sailed just over the cross bar and the Bluejays' keeper made a pair of critical stops. Elmhurst, however, added a late insurance goal to take the 3-1 decision.
Adele Bruggeman suffered the loss in goal for Saint Mary's while making six saves.
The Belles return to MIAA play this Saturday when they travel to Albion for a noon match-up against the Britons.
