SMC vs. Holy Cross
Belles Open Season with Win
NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The Saint Mary's College soccer team opened up the 2009 campaign with a 3-0 home win over neighboring Holy Cross College on Tuesday afternoon.
Gaining control of the ball early, the Belles got some help early from the Saints as a Holy Cross defender deflected the ball into the Saint Mary's goal to put the home team up 1-0 in the 24th minute of play. In the 32nd minute, sophomore Michelle Leonard found Ashley Morfin just outside of the six yard box. Morfin's shot bounced off of the left post to Katelyn Tondo-Steele, who fired the ball into the back of the net for the Belles' second goal of the game.
The Belles continued to apply pressure and broke though for another goal just before the half. Katy Durkin battled to gain control of the ball from a Holy Cross defender and sent a shot inside the far right post to give the Belles a 3-0 advantage at the half.
The three goals were more than enough as the Saint Mary's defense held the Saints to just one shot on goal the entire 90 minutes of play. Senior Patty Duffy and freshman Adele Bruggeman combined to shut out Holy Cross as Duffy registered the lone save for the Belles.
The Belles will look to keep on the right track as they travel to Centre College (Kentucky) for a tournament this weekend. Saint Mary's will face off against host Centre on Saturday at 7:00 p.m.
