SMC vs. Marian
Belles Fall to Knights, 3-0
NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The Saint Mary's College soccer team fell in a 3-0 decision to NAIA Marian University on Saturday afternoon.
The Knights took advantage of a pair of corner kicks in the 19th and 22nd minutes of the game with two goals on headers to gain a 2-0 lead. Marian then added another goal in the 39th minute on a ball that drifted just inside the far post.
The Belles played a strong match on both sides of the ball throughout the contest as Saint Mary's had more shots (18 to Marian's 9), shots on goal (7 to Marian's 6), and corner kicks (8 to Marian's 3). The Belles' defense shut down the Knights' offense in the second half, allowing just two shots on goal while not giving up any corner kicks.
Eleven different players registered at least one shot for the Belles. Adele Bruggeman made her first start in goal of her collegiate career and made a save in the first half. Patty Duffy came into the game at the half and picked up a pair of saves of her own.
The Belles will begin MIAA play next week as they travel to Adrian for both teams' first conference contest of the season on Wednesday.
