SMC vs. Olivet
Belles Battle Back to Draw with Comets
OLIVET, Mich. - The Saint Mary's soccer team scored a goal with just over 12 minutes remaining in regulation and battled Olivet to a 1-1 double-overtime tie in the Belles' season finale.
Olivet got on the scoreboard early with a goal from 15 yards out in the sixth minute for a quick 1-0 lead.
The two teams would battle throughout the first and second halves without finding the back of the net until the Belles got the equalizer late in the second half. Senior Katie Wehrli sent a pass from the left sideline to classmate Sam Smogor, who finished the ball from eight yards out for her second goal of the season with just 12:22 left in the second half.
The teams each had a pair of shots on goal over the course of the two overtime periods, but neither could convert those opportunities to goals and the contest ended in a 1-1 double-overtime tie.
The Belles were largely kept in the game by the play of their defensive backs as well as senior goalkeeper Patty Duffy, who had 12 saves in goal for Saint Mary's.
The Belles conclude the season with a 4-13-2 overall mark and a 1-6-1 conference record.
