SMC vs. Otterbein
Belles Hang Tough With #7 Cardinals
WESTERVILLE, Ohio - Facing their second top-25 team in three days, the Saint Mary's soccer team battled in a 2-0 loss to #7 ranked Otterbein University on Friday afternoon.
An early miscue led to an Otterbein goal in the second minute of play as the ball was deflected into the air and landed in the box for the Cardinals' Abby Misch to put away. The Belles' defense kept the Otterbein offense off the scoreboard for the remainder of the first half as sophomore Caitlin Walsh notched seven saves in the opening frame alone.
Just over 15 minutes into the second half, Otterbein got their second goal of the game as Adrienne Novak cut through the defense and struck a shot inside the top left corner of the goal for the 2-0 advantage.
The Cardinals put 18 of their 37 shots on goal as Walsh finished the game with an impressive 16 saves in her goalkeeping debut.
The Belles (0-5) will take on Ohio Northern in the second day of the Otterbein Tournament. Saint Mary's and the Polar Bears are scheduled to kick off at 2:30 p.m. tomorrow.
