  • Hinchey will serve as team captain for the second consecutive year.

A new season with many new faces and several new opportunities is on the horizon for the Saint Mary’s soccer team in 2018.

Fifteen newcomers join five returners as the Belles put forward a competitive side this fall. Junior captain Kellen Hinchey is joined by classmate Thallia Robles as the two most seasoned veterans for coach Jesse Urquhart’s squad. A second-year captain, Hinchey has started in 33 games in the previous two years and has tallied a goal and four assists from the midfield. Robles has made 28 starts and has had playing time in 30 contests to-date while amassing 258 career saves. Delaney Rohlman joins the pair as the third junior on the squad after competing for the Saint Mary’s basketball team for the past two seasons.

Megan Saunders, Kelsey Matyi, and Ashley Hernandez are joined by newcomers Elizabeth Schulte and Alexis Hernandez to make up a corps of sophomore leaders. Saunders started in and competed in all 18 matches last season primarily as a center back. Matyi showed her versatility in her first year by playing both in attacking and defensive positions in nine contests while collecting an assist. Ashley Hernandez made 10 starts and saw time in all 18 games last fall and tallied an assist.

Twelve members of the class of 2022 round out the squad in 2018 with several of those student-athletes coming into Saint Mary’s with all-area, all-region, and all-state soccer honors to their names.

The 2018 season begins on Saturday, September 1 when the Belles travel to IU East for a 3:00 p.m. contest. The eight-game MIAA slate of competition starts on Wednesday, September 26 when Saint Mary’s travels to Albion for a 4:00 p.m. match.
