2016 Soccer Outlook
The Saint Mary’s soccer team looks to continue to build their tradition of excellence on and off the field. A veteran core welcomes a young group as the Belles, under the guidance of head coach Jesse Urquhart, aim to rejuvenate the program.
Emily Rompola ’17, Liza Felix ’17, and Kate Vasile ’17 were all impact players for the Belles during the 2015 season and have the opportunity to lead the Belles in 2016.
Rompola, Felix, and Vasile have embraced leadership roles on and off the field for the squad during the past year. The trio were among the team’s leading scorers during the 2015 campaign while making at least 16 appearances each. Rompola has been a mainstay in the backfield for the Belles since her freshman season while Felix and Vasile have continued to develop into strong scoring threats up top.
Kay Thursby ’18 and Emily Lambert ’18 help lead a group of returning student-athletes who are eager to contribute in 2016. Thursby was a vital piece to the Belles’ defensive efforts. She and Lambert each made at least 14 appearances during the past year. Emily Beedie '19 rejoins the team for her sophomore season after making big contributions on the Belles' back line during her first season.
Eleven newcomers look to breathe engery, excitement, and anticipation into the program as all eleven will vie for playing time to contribute to the team's success in 2016.
The Belles open the year on Friday and Saturday, September 2 and 3 as they host an invitational tournament. Saint Mary's squares off against Manchester at 5:30 p.m. with Kalamazoo and Milwaukee School of Engineering rounding out the tournament pool. MIAA competition begins on Tuesday, September 7 when the Belles travel to Albion for a 5:00 p.m. contest.
