Belles Drop Pair to Bulldogs
NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The Saint Mary's softball team fell in both games of a conference doubleheader against Adrian by 14-3 and 9-0 scores on Thursday afternoon.
The Bulldogs took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning of the opener on a two out, two-run home run. The Belles responded right away in the bottom half of the inning to knot the score at 2-2. After Lauren Enayati and Maureen Healy starting things off with back-to-back singles, Ashley Peterson bounced a single right back up the middle that plated the pair to square away the score.
After a scoreless second, the Bulldogs score a run in the second, one in the third, and four in the fourth to gain an 8-2 lead over the Belles.
In the bottom of the fourth, Kristen Nelson started off with an infield single off of the pitcher's glove and Lauren Enayati followed her up with an infield single of her own. After the pair moved into scoring position on a grounder to the second baseman, Ashley Peterson was able to score Nelson from third on an infield out to give Saint Mary's their third run of the game.
The Bulldogs, however, pushed across six more runs over the final two innings of the game, and the Belles could not get the rally going as they fell by the 14-3 margin.
Monica Palicki was dealt the loss in the opener, giving up 18 hits and five walks while striking out four.
In game two, the Belles got singles from Maureen Healy and Ashley Peterson in the top of the first inning, but were unable to plate a run early.
Adrian scored a run in the bottom of the second, three in the third, and five in the fourth as the Belles had trouble hitting the holes of the defense to get within striking distance of the Bulldogs. Saint Mary's got a single from Angela Gillis in the fourth and a single from Sara Montelongo in the fifth, but the Belles could not string together hits to chip away and fell by the 9-0 score in five innings.
Gillis suffered the loss in game two as she allowed 12 hits and walked a pair with one strike out.
On the day, the trio from Marian Catholic of Lauren Enayati, Maureen Healy, and Ashley Peterson each tallied two hits. Peterson drove in all three runs while Enayati and Healy each scored once for the Belles. The senior outfielder also broke another school record with her three RBIs as she now hold the record for most RBIs in a season, previously set in 2007.
Saint Mary's (16-14, 5-3 MIAA) will travel to Olivet for a conference doubleheader against the Comets on Saturday, April 17 beginning at 1:00 p.m.
