Belles Battle to Sweep Spartans

NORTH MANCHESTER, Ind. - The Saint Mary's softball team was able to hold off the Spartans in both games for a doubleheader sweep of Manchester on Saturday.
In game one, Manchester scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth, but the Belles responded right back with a pair of runs of their own. Hayley Bojorquez led off the inning with a double and Sara Montelongo followed that up with an infield single. After advancing to second and third on a sacrifice bunt by Kate Mitchell, Bojorquez scored on an error by the shortstop and Montelongo crossed the plate on a single by Lauren Enayati.
Manchester regained the lead in the bottom half of the fifth, but once again the Belles responded immediately as Bojorquez notched her fifth home run of the season to tie the game at 3-3.
The Belles used a two-out rally in the top of the seventh to grab their first lead of the game. Enayati hit her second straight single and Maureen Healy followed her up with a walk. Ashley Peterson then completed the rally with her 14th career home run to put Saint Mary's up 6-3.
Manchester was able to plate three unearned runs in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings. After a scoreless eighth, the Belles got the eventual game-winner when Kate Mitchell scored on a hard-hit grounder by Enayati to the Spartan first baseman. The defense came through in the clutch and gave Saint Mary's the 7-6 extra innings win.
Monica Palicki picked up the win in the circle for the Belles. The sophomore went nine complete innings while giving up just one earned run and striking out four. Bojorquez and Enayati each tallied mulit-hit efforts in game one and combined for three runs scored and three RBIs to lead the way. Peterson had three RBIs in game one for Saint Mary's.
In game two, the Belles would be the ones to get the lead first. Saint Mary's used five hits, including doubles by Sara Montelongo and Maureen Healy, and a sacrifice bunt to plate four runs in the second inning.
The Spartans scored three runs of their own in the bottom half of the frame to cut the Saint Mary's advantage to a run. For the second time in as many games, the Belles got a double by Hayley Bojorquez followed up by a single down the right field line by Sara Montelongo to plate a run.
The offense went on a bit of a tear in the fourth inning for Saint Mary's as five more runs were tallied on the scoreboard by the Belles. With two outs and one run across in the inning, Bojorquez and Montelongo delivered yet again as Bojorquez knocked a two RBI single and Montelongo laced a two RBI double into the Spartan outfield.
Manchester was able to get within two of the Belles with five runs combined in the bottom fifth and sixth innings. Kristen Nelson led off the top of the seventh inning with her third single of the game and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Ashley Peterson for an insurance run as Saint Mary's held on for the 11-8 win.
Angela Gillis picked up the pitching win in game two as she threw all seven innings with two walks and a strike out. Sara Montelongo, Hayley Bojorquez, and Kristen Nelson each tallied three hits apiece in the win. Montelongo had a pair of doubles and a game-high five RBIs while also scoring a run. Bojorquez scored three runs and added a pair of RBIs while Nelson also scored three runs and drove in a run in the victory.
The Belles (9-5) will have over a week off from competition and will next play on Sunday, March 28 when they travel to North Park (Ill.) for a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m. (CST).
