Belles Fall to Cardinals
NAPERVILLE, Ill. - The Saint Mary's softball team fell in a doubleheader to North Central College by 4-0 and 6-5 scores on Thursday.
In game one, the Belles threatened in the top of the first, but were unable to push a run across with a pair of runners in scoring position. The host Cardinals scored twice in the first inning and added runs in the second and third to go up 4-0 through the first three innings.
Ashley Peterson led off the top of the fourth inning with a single to center field. With two away in that same inning, Morgan Bedan singled through the right side to get Peterson into scoring position. The pair, however, would be stranded to end the fourth.
Neither team would score over the final three and a half innings of play as the Belles fell by the 4-0 final.
Monica Palicki suffered the loss in the opener as she threw six innings, allowing just two earned runs, walking two, and striking out one. Ashley Peterson went 2-for-3 with a pair of singles. Morgan Bedan, Kate Mitchell, and Kristen Nelson each added singles for Saint Mary's.
In game two, the Belles jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead after the first half of an inning. Maureen Healy and Ashley Peterson both singled. After Angela Gillis grounded out to shortstop to score Healy, Hayley Bojorquez singled up the middle to score Peterson. Morgan Bedan then laced a double to center field to plate Bojorquez for the three run outburst in the first.
The Cardinals responded with one run in the bottom of the first and four runs in the bottom of the second to take a 5-3 lead.
Saint Mary's came back with a run of their own in the top of the third inning. Angela Gillis had a single up the middle and was followed up by a double by Hayley Bojorquez to put the two into scoring position. Gillis then scored on a sacrifice fly to right field by Morgan Bedan to get the Belles within one at 5-4.
North Central scored a run in the bottom of the fourth inning to stretch their lead back to two runs.
The Belles traded blows with the Cardinals yet again in the top of the fifth. Hayley Bojorquez hit a one-out single through the left side of the defense, and Sara Montelongo delivered a two-out double down the right field line to drive in Bojorquez from second.
Saint Mary's looked to get the equalizer in the top of the sixth when Lauren Enayati and Ashley Peterson both singled and got into scoring position. The Belles, however, would be unable to plate the potential tying and go-ahead runs in the sixth.
Neither team scored in their final at-bats of the game as Saint Mary's fell by the 6-5 final.
Angela Gillis was dealt the loss in the second game, allowing four earned runs and striking out one. Hayley Bojorquez and Ashley Peterson both went 3-for-4 in the game. Bojorquez drove in a run and scored twice while Peterson scored a run. Morgan Bedan went 2-for-3 with a double and a pair of RBIs.
The Belles (11-9) will open up their MIAA schedule when they travel to Kalamazoo on Saturday, April 3, with the first game of the doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m.
