Belles Earn Two More Wins on Day Four
CAPE CORAL, Fla. - The Saint Mary's softball team earned wins over Heidelberg and St. Joseph's (NY) on their fourth day of play in Florida on Wednesday.
In the opener against Heidelberg, the Belles had balanced offensive efforts in a 5-2 victory. Angela Gillis led the way by going 3-for-3 in the win with a run scored and an RBI. Kate Mitchell also collected multiple hits by going 2-for-3 with a pair of singles and an RBI. Morgan Bedan tallied a single and scored a run with a stolen base, and Kelli Spurlock had a double and scored twice for Saint Mary's in the win.
Callie Selner picked up her third pitching win of the season by going the distance and scattering six hits while striking out four.
In the afternoon game, the Belles scored early and often against a St. Joseph's squad that won 28 games and finished third in the United States Collegiate Athletic Association postseason tournament in 2010. Saint Mary's jumped on the scoreboard with three runs in the first, then the Belles added one in the third and six in the fourth on their way to a 10-2 win in five innings.
Kristen Nelson was a perfect 3-for-3 from the plate with a single, double, and a triple. The junior scored three runs and drove in two to lead the Belles. Chrissy Porter was also 3-for-3 from the dish as she scored twice and picked up a pair of RBIs. Lauren Enayati, Morgan Bedan, and Kelli Spurlock each collected a pair of hits in the win. Enayati had two doubles and scored once, Bedan had a double while scoring twice, and Spurlock had a double and a game-high four RBIs. Kate Mitchell added a double and a run scored in the team's seventh win of the season.
Monica Palicki continued her strong start to the 2011 season with four strikeouts and three hits allowed in the mercy rule-shortened game.
The Belles (7-1) will conclude their spring break trip in Fort Myers tomorrow when they take on St. Lawrence at 5:00 p.m. and Washington College (Md.) at 9:00 p.m.
