Game Two Box Score

NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The Saint Mary's softball team fell in a non-conference doubleheader to North Central on Sunday afternoon, dropping 12-0 and 8-1 contests.

The Belles had a tough time trying to get the offense going on the day, particularly in game one. While North Central scored in each of the five innings of play, the Belles went down in order in each inning but the second inning. Chrissy Porter drew a lead off walk and would be the lone base runner to reach safely in the game for Saint Mary's. The Cardinals' Vlasta Mangia collected the five-inning no hitter.

Saint Mary's had more of a spark in the second game, however, as Lauren Enayati led of the bottom of the first inning by beating out an infield single. After Enayati was out on the force at second on a fielder's choice for Emily Sherwood, Porter singled to put runners on first and second. Sherwood and Porter both moved into scoring position after a passed ball, but the Belles were unable to push any runs across in the first.

North Central scored an unearned run in the top of the third for the first run of the second game. The Belles were looking to respond right back in the bottom half of the inning. With one out gone, Enayati dropped a hit just inside the left foul line for her second hit of the game. The rally would come up short as the Cardinals doubled off the junior on a line drive back to the pitcher by Sherwood.

The Cardinals posted two more runs in the top of the fourth for the 3-0 lead. Chrissy Porter had a line drive single to right center field, but then was victim to the same play as Enayati in the previous inning on a line drive back to the pitcher by Morgan Bedan.

The Belles got within 3-1 of North Central in the fifth inning. Callie Selner and Angela Gillis had back-to-back singles with one out. They both moved into scoring position on a ground out to the pitch by Kristen Nelson. Enayati then came up and put the ball in play which caused a lapse in communication between the Cardinals' third baseman and shortstop as the junior's hit rolled between the legs of the shortstop, allowing Selner to score from third.

North Central added four runs in the sixth and one in the seventh while Saint Mary's would not be able to get a runner back into scoring position over the final innings of the 8-1 loss.

Angela Gillis suffered the loss in the circle in her first pitching appearance of the season. The junior threw all seven innings, allowing four earned runs and walking one while striking out a pair.

Lauren Enayati and Chrissy Porter were both 2-for-3 in game two. Morgan Bedan, Callie Selner, and Angela Gillis each added a hit for the Belles in the game.

Saint Mary's will look to regroup and get back in the win column on Tuesday when they travel to Franklin for a doubleheader against the Grizzlies beginning at 3:45 p.m.
