Belles Split in Final Games in Florida
FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Saint Mary's softball team concluded their spring break games with a win against St. Lawrence earlier in the evening followed by a loss to Washington (Md.) in the nightcap.
In the Belles' five inning 10-2 win against St. Lawrence, Kelli Spurlock and Kate Mitchell were both 3-for-3 from the plate. Spurlock scored three times while Mitchell had a double, a run scored, and a pair of RBIs. Callie Selner helped her own cause by going 2-for-3 from the plate with a run scored and four RBIs as the Belles scored 10 runs on 11 hits.
Selner allowed just two hits, walked one, and struck out three in her fourth win of the season in the circle for the Belles
Against Washington (Md.), the Shorewomen took the lead in the bottom of the first by scoring a pair with two outs. The Belles chipped away and took a 3-2 lead in the top of the fourth. Washington would respond with two in the bottom half of the inning and one in the fifth for a 5-3 lead. Saint Mary's knotted the game at 5-5 in the top of the sixth, but the Shorewomen again plated a pair with two outs gone in the inning for the eventual 7-5 win.
Kate Mitchell led the Belles in game two by going 2-for-3, scoring twice and stealing a base for Saint Mary's. Lauren Enayati, Kristen Nelson, Hayley Bojorquez, and Chrissy Porter each went 2-for-4 from the dish in the loss. Enayati and Nelson also drove in a run for Saint Mary's as the Belles stranded eight runners on Thursday night.
Monica Palicki suffered her first loss of the 2011 campaign, throwing six complete innings, walking four, and striking out one.
Four of the last five years, the Saint Mary's softball team has left Florida with an 8-2 or better record.
The Belles (8-2) are slated to host Goshen for a doubleheader on Wednesday, March 23 at the Saint Mary's softball field beginning at 3:30 p.m.
