SMC vs. Brockport, Nichols
Belles Open Season With Split
CAPE CORAL, Fla. - The Saint Mary's softball team opened the 2011 campaign with a split on their spring break trip on Sunday.
The Belles fell 3-2 to SUNY-Brockport in the first game of the year as unearned runs were the difference in the outcome. Leading the Belles' offense was Morgan Bedan, who went 2-for-3 from the plate with a pair of doubles and a run batted in. Hayley Bojorquez was 1-for-2 with a walk and a run scored for Saint Mary's as the Belles stranded five runners. Callie Selner suffered the loss in her collegiate debut. The freshman pitched all seven innings, allowing just four hits with no earned runs and striking out three.
Saint Mary's rebounded quickly, however, earning a 12-6 win over Nichols. Freshmen Chrissy Porter and Kelli Spurlock were both 3-for-4 for the Belles. Porter had a double, a sacrifice fly, two runs scored, and drove in three. Spurlock added a double of her own with a pair of runs while notching four RBIs for Saint Mary's. Junior Angela Gillis had a hit and three walks in the game as the Belles scored 12 runs on 12 hits. Classmate Monica Palicki picked up the win in the circle as she surrendered just two extra basehits and four earned runs with three strike outs.
The Belles (1-1) will square off with Kenyon and UMass-Dartmouth tomorrow morning at 9:00 and 11:00 a.m., respectively.
