On-Going Opportunities

Beyond the Belle

Beyond the Belle, formerly known as the College Academy of Tutoring program, was formed in 2006 to help meet the needs of students in the South Bend community. This program provides Saint Mary’s students with opportunities to work with school-aged children. Students can serve as a student assistant at Darden Elementary School during the day, or as a tutor in an after-school program with the Notre Dame Center for Civic innovation where they can work one-on-one with students on literacy skills.

Food Waste Fighters

Our office coordinates two student initiatives: Composting and Food Recovery. Food Waste Fighters aims to reduce our food waste on campus. Together, we have saved around 2,000 pounds of food from the landfill during the 2020-2021 academic year.

  • Composting - With the help of student leaders and volunteers, we are able to compost during both lunch and dinner meal times. The collected compost is taken from the dining hall to our Sustainable Farm, where it will be turned regularly and then used as fertilizer for existing crops there. Students can do their part by following the posters and composting the appropriate food or volunteering to take the compost back to the farm.
  • Food Recovery- Another way we reduce food waste on campus is through out recovery program! At the end of the dinner meal, students collaboratively work with kitchen staff to weigh the leftover food from the day. The food is then taken to South Bend’s Center for the Homeless where they’re able to reheat the food and give it to residents.

Sustainable Farm

A recent addition of acres of land was added to our campus, and we are utilizing them to create a farm! Our current farm uses compost from our existing composting program to nurture the soil. This farm is run by one farmer and helped by our student leaders and volunteers. Weekly maintenance is done to have the farm nurture the existing soil and advance towards expansion.

We are growing a wide range of vegetables and plants:

  • Garlic
  • Onions
  • 3 types of Snow/Snap peas
  • 2 typesof green beans
  • 2 types of dry beans
  • Red/White/Sweet potatoes
  • Parsley
  • Butternut/ Zucchini squash
  • Okra
  • Beets
  • Sunchokes

Service Saturdays

Service Saturday is an opportunity to explore your passions through service, while meeting new friends and making connections with local South Bend agencies. The mission of Service Saturday is to Serve the Community, Serve the College and Serve our Students.

Throughout the semester, a mix of students and student leaders are taken out into South Bend to volunteer and to participate in meaningful outreach to our neighboring town. Providing an atmosphere where our students are able to share their  individual gifts and talents to better our society.

Students work alongside local residents and nonprofit partners from around the area to meet the needs of the community  like feeding the homeless, gardening, park and clean-ups and assisting at the local food bank. We will be able to identify the needs of our neighbors while assessing how we can help.

Hoping to make a sustainable impact on our students well beyond their days at Saint Mary’s College, Service Saturday will provide them the opportunity to integrate their education with direct service to the community.
