Belles More Than Double Score in Day Two at Championships
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Saint Mary's swim team more than doubled their team score at the second day of the MIAA Swimming and Diving Championships.
The Belles entered the day with a team score of 73 and finished the day with 160 thanks to several strong individual performances. Calvin continues to lead the meet with a team score of 698.
Leading the way again for the Belles was freshman Ellie Watson. After earning a berth in the championship finals in the morning preliminaries, Watson took a fifth place finish in the 400 individual medley with a time of 4:45.50, which was good enough for the third fastest time in program history.
Complementing Watson were Katie Griffin, Gen Spittler, Barbara Beidler, Sara Niemann, Caila Poythress, and Emily Pearl, who all made it to the consolation finals of their events on Friday. Griffin finished 12th in the 100 back with a 1:02.57 and 12th in the 100 butterfly in a time of 1:01.21. Spittler took 16th in the 100 fly with a 1:02.90. Niemann and Beidler both competed in the consolation final of the 200 free as Niemann finished 14th in 2:03.47 while Beidler finished 16th in 2:05.38. Poythress and Pearl joined Griffin in the 100 back consolation final. Poythress finished in 14th with a 1:03.51 and Pearl finished 16th with a time of 1:04.68.
The three day championships will conclude on Saturday at Calvin College. The morning preliminaries will begin at 10 a.m. and the finals will commence at 6 p.m.
