Troubleshooting Common Phone Problems

If you experience a problem, please check the list below before calling for repair. If you still have a problem after following these instructions, contact the Telecommunications Help Desk at extension 4715 weekdays from 8am-noon and 1-5pm.

Callers always receive a busy sound:

Ask caller to determine if the busy is a regular tone or a "fast busy". A regular busy means your line is being used. A fast busy indicates that all lines coming into South Bend or Saint Mary's College, are busy at that moment. Ask callers to continue re-dialing.

Calls go to another room:

Check your call forward button.

Howling noise:

Phone has been hung up improperly. Hang phone up correctly and wait a full minute before picking up the handset. If no dial tone, contact the Telecommunications Office for repair.

Low audio:

No dial tone:

If you have an answering machine, fax, or computer modem, unplug it and count to 10 SLOWLY. Plug it back in. If dial tone is restored in a few minutes, the problem was that the add-on equipment did not disconnect from the last call and the phone timed out. If you do not have add-on equipment, unplug the phone, wait 1 full minute. If still no dial tone, contact the Telecommunications Help Desk for repair at extension 4715.

Phone rings a short "ding", no one on the line:

This is a reminder that you have set all calls to forward to another phone or to the voice mail system. Press the "Call Forward" button to remove the "forward all calls" feature.

Tone in background that rises in crescendo, then abruptly cuts off and repeats:

There is a phone near you which is off the hook or hung up improperly and has timed out. This will not interrupt your service. Contact the Telecommunications Help Desk at extension 4715 if you are unable to locate the phone that is off hook.

I set up my Voice Mail, but callers can't leave messages:
