#12 Calvin Knocks off Saint Mary's in Semifinals
The 12 th ranked Calvin Knight fought off a valiant Saint Mary’s squad 3-0 (30-26, 30-27, 30-22) Friday evening in the semifinals of the MIAA tournament.
The win extends Calvin’s winning streak to 22 matches in upping their record to 31-1 while the Belles end their season with a 17-10 mark.
In the opening game, the Knights were down 12-6 early but fought back to take a 19-14 lead. However, Saint Mary’s clawed their way back into the opening game and knotted the score at 25-25 but Calvin ended the game on a 5-1 scoring spree to take game one.
During the second game in which neither team was able to take full control, the Belles held a 25-24 lead but once again a game Calvin squad fought back to take a 2-0 lead in the match. The final game was similar to the previous game until, with the match tied at 22-22, Calvin’s Kristen Kalb served out the match for the Knights with eight consecutive points.
Cathy Kurczak had a team high 11 kills while posting five block assists and block solo for Saint Mary’s. Kaela Hellmann also recorded a fine match at the net with 10 kills and a .381 hitting percentage.
A rugged Belles net defense posted a 9.0-1.5 team block advantage in the match.
Molly Krikke tallied a match high 18 kills with a .400 hitting percentage for the Knights. Kalb also posted double figure kills with 17 for Calvin.
