SMC vs. Alma
Late Rallies Lift Belles to Win
NOTRE DAME, Ind. - Using a pair of rallies late in the second and third sets, the Saint Mary's College volleyball team earned their first MIAA win of the season with a 3-0 victory over Alma.
In the first set, the two teams traded blows early before the Belles took a 7-4 lead on a four-point run. The Belles held the lead late until Alma tied the set at 18-18. Saint Mary's, however, used another four-point run to go up for good and ultimately took the 25-21 decision.
The Belles stormed out to a quick 5-0 lead in the second set by capitalizing on a pair of Alma miscues while getting kills from Lorna Slupczynski and Andrea Sasgen. The Scots came back and tied the match at 20-20 and took a 24-22 lead. The Belles did not concede defeat in the second set, however, and used a pair of kills by Stephanie Bodien and a service ace by Meghann Rose to come back and win 26-24.
Much like the second set, the Belles established a lead before Alma erased it at 15-15. The Scots put themselves within a point of taking the set at 24-19, but the Belles showed their resiliency with their backs against the wall again by mounting a comeback to tie the match at 25-25. Lorna Slupczynski locked up the win for the Belles with a pair of kills to take the third set 27-25 for Saint Mary's.
Lorna Slupczynski led all players with 21 kills and 19 digs in the match. Andrea Sasgen added 10 kills for the Belles for a double-digit kill effort. Stephanie Bodien (18), Meghann Rose (16), Ellen Huelsmann (16), and Danie Brink (11) each had double-digit digs for the Belles. Brink also had match-high honors with 38 assists to help lead the Saint Mary's offense.
Next up for the Belles will be Hope College on Wednesday, September 16. Saint Mary's will travel to DeVos Fieldhouse to take on the Flying Dutch at 7:00 p.m.
