Belles Fall in Opener to Pilots
NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The Saint Mary's College volleyball team fell in their season opener to cross-town rival Bethel in straight sets (25-21, 25-17, 25-21).
The Belles battled back from an early deficit in the opening set to tie the Pilots at 9-9 before visiting Bethel regained the lead for good. Saint Mary's would get back within a point at 16-15 and 17-16 on a kills by Danie Brink and Stephanie Bodien. Bethel, however, went on a five point run to get out of reach and take the first set 25-21.
The Pilots took an early lead in the second set and would not let the Belles get within striking distance as Bethel went up 2-0 in the match with a 25-17 decision.
In the third set, the Belles battled back once again to get within a point at 21-20 on a block by Emily Caltrider and Kathleen Mills. The Pilots once again used a small run to go up 24-20 before taking the set 25-21.
Andrea Sasgen led the Belles with 10 kills on the night while adding a solo block and a block assist. Meghann Rose shared match-high dig honors with 18 on the evening. Lorna Slupczynski also added a double-digit dig effort with 12 of her own. Kathleen Mills and Emily Caltrider, meanwhile, led the way with four block assists each for the Belles.
Saint Mary's will take to the road next and compete in the Capital University Tournament in Columbus, Ohio beginning on Friday afternoon against Muskingum at 2:30 p.m.
