Belles Bow to #11 Calvin
NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The Saint Mary's College volleyball team fell 3-0 (25-13, 25-22, 24-21) to #11 Calvin on Tuesday evening.
The Belles used a pair of kills by Andrea Sasgen to take a 4-2 lead early in the first set. The Knights, however, used a five point run to take the lead at 7-4 and a six point run later in the match to propel them to a 25-13 win in the opener.
The second set was a tight one between the two teams. The Belles were able to storm out to a quick 9-4 lead. The Knights would come from behind to tie the score at 10-10, 14-14, 15-15, 18-18, 19-19, and 20-20 before going up 22-20 late in the set on a Saint Mary's miscue. The Belles battled back to tie the match at 22-22, but Calvin used a pair of kills and a block to close out the set.
In the third set, the Knights would take an early lead and never fully relinquish it. The Belles were able to tie the set at 16-16 before Calvin regained the lead at 17-16 and never gave it up again.
Lorna Slupczynski shared match-high honors in kills on the night with 11. Ellen Huelsmann had eight digs to lead Saint Mary's while Meghann Rose had seven digs of her own.
The Belles will take on Adrian College on Saturday as the second round of MIAA regular season play begins. The Belles will host the Bulldogs at 1:00 p.m. at Angela Athletic Facility.
