Belles Fall in Battle to Knights
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Saint Mary's volleyball team fell in one of their hardest-played matches of the season to #14 nationally-ranked Calvin in the first round of the MIAA Tournament 3-1 (25-11, 21-25, 25-22, 25-23).
After falling in the first set, the Belles came out on fire in the second set ready to prove that they could compete with one of the top teams in the country. The Belles were able to separate themselves from the Knights down the stretch to gain a 20-15 lead. Despite come-back attempts by host Calvin, Saint Mary's was able to finish strong and take the second set by a 25-21 score. It was the first time since the 2007 season that the Belles took a set from the Knights.
The Belles kept right with Calvin in the third set until the Knights used a quick run to go up 18-14. After a Saint Mary's timeout, the Belles fought their way back into the set to close the gap to 23-22. The Knights, however, scored the next two points to go up two sets to one.
The fourth set was just as tense as the second and third sets had been with both teams battling in all aspects of the game. Neither team was able to gain a sizable lead as the score was tied 13-13. The teams traded leads and Saint Mary's was able to use a burst of energy to go up 21-20. After the game was deadlocked yet again at 22-22, Calvin was able to find an edge against the Belles and took the fourth set 25-23.
Lorna Slupczynski and Lindsey Stuss led the Belles with 15 and 13 kills, respectively. Meghann Rose had a team-high 21 digs while Stephanie Bodien added 15 and Danie Brink had 11 to help aid the defensive efforts on the night. Brink also had 34 assists for the Belles.
The Belles end the season 9-17.
