SMC vs. Olivet
Belles Ground Comets in Straight Sets
NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The Saint Mary's College volleyball team picked up a 3-0 (25-14, 25-18, 25-14) MIAA win over Olivet on Tuesday evening.
The Belles jumped out to a quick 7-1 lead in the first set an never looked back en route to the 25-14 decision in the opener. Stephanie Bodien had five kills in six attempts for a .833 attack percentage to get the momentum going for the Belles early in the match.
In the second set, the Belles were able to establish a lead early on and build upon it. The Comets would get within three points on a couple of occasions, but the Belles were able to respond with a balanced attack to keep at least a four point cushion down the stretch.
Olivet would not go quietly in the third set, however. The Comets came back to tie the match at 6-6, 12-12, and 13-13 before the Belles went on a seven-point run to go up 20-13. Saint Mary's then used three kills and a service ace to finish off the match and take the straight-set victory.
Lorna Slupczynski led all players in the match with a 10 kill performance while adding 10 digs. Andrea Sasgen and Stephanie Bodien, meanwhile, were right behind Slupczynski with nine kills apiece. Meghann Rose had a match-high 23 digs while Danie Brink had 29 assists, a solo block, and three block assists.
The Belles have a short break between matches this week as they travel to Manchester for a contest on Thursday evening, which is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m.
