Belles Fall in Nail-biter against Trine
NOTRE DAME, Ind. - In a match filled with grit and determination, the Saint Mary's College volleyball team fell short in their MIAA opener against Trine in a 3-2 (19-25, 25-23, 25-22, 23-25, 18-20) battle.
After dropping the first set to Trine, the Belles battled back six times to tie the Thunder and eventually went up for good by breaking a 16-16 tie in the second set with a kill by Andrea Sasgen. Saint Mary's squelched a late Thunder come-back in the set and tied the match 1-1 with a 25-23 win in the second frame.
The Belles stormed out to a quick 6-1 lead in the third and never relinquished the lead to take a 25-22 win and a 2-1 advantage in the match.
The fourth set was tight from start to finish as neither team managed to gain more than a two-point lead while the Belles and Thunder were tied 14 times. Eventually, Trine took the set by a 25-23 score to force the deciding fifth set.
The fifth set was much of the same as the fourth in that neither team gained more than a two-point advantage and the set was tied 16 times. Trine, however, came out on top in the fifth by a 20-18 score to take the five-set thriller.
Lorna Slupczynski led the Belles with 27 kills, which matches her career high (27 vs. Adrian, 10/02/07). The senior outside hitter also added 12 digs and a pair of aces for Saint Mary's. Stephanie Bodien added 16 kills and Andrea Sasgen had 11 to help balance the Belles' attack. Danie Brink bettered her career high for assists with 60 on the evening (previously 56 vs. Trine, 10/01/08). Meghann Rose, meanwhile, added 18 digs and Ellen Huelsmann had 14 of her own to lead the Belles defensively on the night.
Next, Saint Mary's will take to the road as they travel to Adrian College this Friday evening for a 7:00 p.m. MIAA match against the Bulldogs.
