SMC vs. Calvin
Belles Go Down Swinging Against #4 Knights
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich - The Saint Mary's volleyball team would not go down without a fight against #4 nationally ranked Calvin, as they suffered a 3-0 (25-20, 25-18, 25-18) loss on Wednesday.
Saint Mary's proved that they could hang tough despite some setbacks against one of the best teams in the conference and the country.
Saint Mary's hung in until the end of each set on the evening. In the third set, for instance, the Belles held a five point lead at 14-9 and forced the host Knights into a timeout. Calvin, however, would rally after that timeout and eventually claim the three-set win over Saint Mary's.
The Belles out-blocked the Knights by a seven-to-four margin on the night.
Autumn Nelson led Saint Mary's with seven kills while Stephanie Bodien (six) and Christi Wyble (five) were close behind. Hailee Leitz, meanwhile, had a team-best 18 assists and Wyble added a pair of solo blocks and two block assists for the Belles.
Saint Mary's (2-6, 1-2 MIAA) will have a break from conference play this weekend as the travel to the Manchester College Invitational on Saturday and Sunday.
