SMC vs. Albion
Belles Earn First MIAA Win With Victory Over Brits
NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The Saint Mary's volleyball took little time to defeat visiting Albion on Friday night as they took the win in an hour by 25-13, 25-17, 25-20 scores.
In the opening set, the Belles looked unstoppable as they had 12 kills with just 2 errors in 31 attempts for a .323 hitting percentage. Stephanie Bodien and Autumn Nelson each had three kills in the set while hitting .429 and .500, respectively. The biggest lead of the set and the entire match came when Saint Mary's went up 23-10 on a kill by Nelson in the opening set.
The Belles kept their collective foot on the accelerator in the second set as they tallied 17 kills en route to a 25-17 set win. In the third set, the Belles and the Brits each had 10 kills, but Saint Mary's was able to put together a better hitting percentage and have one more ace than Albion in the closely-played 25-20 win. Saint Mary's battled from behind throughout much of that third set but was able to go up for good on a kill by Ellen Huelsmann at 21-20.
Bodien had a match-high 12 kills on the night to go along with another match-high 14 digs and a pair of block assists. The sophomore also had a .423 attack percentage on the night, which was also the best of any player. Six other players for Saint Mary's tallied at least four kills on the night. Danie Brink added 30 assists and three service aces. Ellen Huelsmann, meanwhile, had 11 digs. Christi Wyble was a force to be reckoned with at the net as the freshman had two solo blocks and two block assists to lead the way for Saint Mary's.
The Belles (2-4, 1-0 MIAA) will travel to Olivet tomorrow for an afternoon MIAA match against the Comets beginning at 1:00 p.m.
