Belles Grounded by Pilots in Season Opener
MISHAWAKA, Ind. - The Saint Mary's volleyball team fell by a hard fought 3-0 (25-17, 25-12, 25-23) margin against cross-town rival Bethel on Wednesday.
In the first set, the Belles were able to build a slight lead early against the Pilots, who were playing in their ninth match of the season. That early season experience proved to be an advantage for Bethel as the Pilots were able to go on a run and take the first set. After a tough second set, the Belles once again gained a lead in the third set as they would not go down without a fight. In the end, however, Bethel would prevail in three sets as they narrowly edged out Saint Mary's 25-23 to take the win.
Allison Zandarski led the Belles with seven kills on the night while Stephanie Bodien each chipped in six kills of her own. Christi Wyble added a solo block and a pair of block assists, and Zandarski had a solo block on the night. Danie Brink helped pace the offensive attack with 15 assists while adding nine digs. Ellen Huelsmann and Meghann Rose helped key the defense as they notched 14 and 13 digs, respectively.
The Belles (0-1) will face off against more tough competition this weekend when they travel to Elmhurst College for a tournament on Friday and Saturday. Saint Mary's will open up the tournament against the University of Chicago at 4:00 p.m. CST on Friday.
