SMC at Elmhurst Invitational Day One
Belles Battle in Losses To Chicago, Wheaton
ELMHURST, Ill. - The Saint Mary's volleyball team suffered a pair of tough losses to the University of Chicago and Wheaton in the first day of the Elmhurst Invitational on Friday.
In their opening match against Chicago, the Belles lost 3-0 (26-24, 25-17, 26-24) to a Maroons squad that received votes in the AVCA Division III pre-season poll. Stephanie Bodien had a volleyball double-double with 11 kills and 12 digs while also adding three blocks. Danie Brink set up the offense with 30 assists with a service ace while Allison Zandarski had seven kills, three digs, and a block. Hailee Leitz added 10 digs to lead the way on offense.
Against Wheaton, the Belles put in an all-around team effort but fell just short in a five set thriller by 25-19, 13-25, 28-30, 25-13, 15-8 scores. Lindsey Stuss had a career-high 15 kills with three digs while Bodien put away 12 kills of her own with four digs and two blocks. Leitz registered 16 digs with a pair of aces, and Zandarski had 11 digs, three blocks, and nine kills in the loss. Brink, meanwhile, tallied 32 assists, six digs, and three kills for the Belles.
Saint Mary's returns to the court tomorrow morning when they face off against Western New England College and the host Elmhurst College in the second day of the Elmhurst Invitational.
