SMC vs. Olivet
Belles Fall Short of Comets
NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The Saint Mary's volleyball team was within just a few points of taking a 3-1 win, but fell 3-1 (25-23, 25-14, 23-25, 25-22) to Olivet on Wednesday night.
In a match that featured 13 ties over the course of the night, the Belles were able to battle back from deficits in the first, third, and fourth sets to give the Comets a fight for the decision. In the first set, Saint Mary's trailed 16-9 before scraping back to tie the opener at 22-22. After going on a five-point run midway through the third set, Saint Mary's briefly relinquished their lead at 19-18 before taking the 25-23 decision. In the final set, the Belles were down 23-18 and refused to go down without a battle by getting within one at 23-22 before ultimately being defeated.
Saint Mary's had five players tally at least five kills in the match and was led by Stephanie Bodien's nine kills. In what was the team's "Dig for the Cure" fundraiser match to raise funds and awareness for the fight against breast cancer, the Belles posted 80 digs, led by Meghann Rose's 25 and Ellen Huelsmann's 22. Christi Wyble, meanwhile, had a match-high six blocks - one solo block and five block assists.
The Belles will return to action next week when they host nationally-ranked Calvin on Tuesday night at Angela Athletic Facility.
