SMC vs. Trine

Belles Grounded by Thunder

Box Score

NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The Saint Mary's volleyball team fell in a hard-fought 3-0 (25-22, 25-23, 25-21) match against Trine on Friday night in the Belles' home finale.

In a match that had 25 tie scores and 14 lead changes over the course of the night, no advantage was safe for either team.  While both teams were able to establish better-than-modest leads of as much as five points, each set was determined by just a few points falling one way or the other.  In the end, the Thunder prevailed with the 3-0 win in spite of the closely-played match.

Stephanie Bodien (Grosse Pointe Park, Mich./Mercy) led the Belles' offense with 13 kills on the night while adding eight digs.  Meghann Rose (16) and Lindsey Stuss (11) each contributed with double-digit dig efforts.  Hailee Leitz added 27 assists while Allison Zandarski gave the Belles big momentum swings with her two solo blocks and a block assist.  Ellen Huelsmann, the lone senior on the squad who was honored before the game for her Senior Night, had a solid all-around game for the Belles with four kills, seven digs, two assists, two block assists, and a service ace.

The Belles will conclude the regular season tomorrow when they travel to #7 nationally ranked Hope for a 1:00 p.m. match against the Flying Dutch.  After tomorrow's matches, the Belles will find out who they will face in the opening round of the 2010 MIAA Tournament, which will begin next Tuesday.
