Volleyball Outlook

  • The Belles look to build off of a sucessful 2017 season with another strong year in 2018.

The Saint Mary’s volleyball team continued to cement themselves as a top contender in the highly competitive Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association in 2017. The Belles posted their fourth consecutive season with at least 15 wins and finished third in the league with 10 conference victories.

Morgan VanderWey, Nicole Lukens, and Audrey Shannon all had immediate impacts on the team last fall. VanderWey was third among players in the league in assists and ranked seventh nationally in assists per set among all Division III freshmen during her first season with the Belles. Lukens garnered MIAA Player of the Week accolades a season ago as she provided a big punch from the outside hitter position. Shannon, meanwhile, as a two-time MIAA Specialist Player of the Week and garnered Second Team All-MIAA recognition as the Belles’ libero.

Alyssa Chong, Lindsey Pelletier, Laura Keating, and Brittney Tarkanyi all return to the squad in 2018 after making contributions to the team’s success a year ago. Chong was third in blocks and fifth in kills a year ago. Pelletier, meanwhile, was fourth in blocks and sixth in kills last fall. Keating had a 1.000 serve reception percentage, and Tarkanyi was not far behind with a .929 reception percentage. Nola Wallace, Claire Hennessy, and Hannah Stacy all join the Belles and are eager to add to the winning legacy of the volleyball program.

The Belles open their season on Tuesday, September 4 host Manchester at Angela Athletic & Wellness Complex at 7:00 p.m. Official MIAA competition begins on September 18 when Saint Mary’s hosts Albion at 7:00 p.m.
