Strong Second Half Propels Saint Mary’s to Victory

ADRIAN, MI – Saint Mary’s overcame a slow first half to knock off Adrian 56-48 Wednesday evening in MIAA women’s basketball action at Merillat Sports and Fitness Center.

The win lifts the Belles record to 2-6 overall and 1-1 in MIAA action while Adrian falls to 3-2 and 1-1 respectively.

During the opening 20 minutes the Bulldogs never trailed but didn’t hold a lead larger than five points during the opening session in taking a 25-22 edge at halftime. Saint Mary’s shot just 29 percent (9-of-31) in the first half.

The Belles came out in the second half on a 9-2 scoring spurt in taking a 33-27 advantage with 16:01 remaining in the contest. Saint Mary’s never relinquish their lead in the second frame and held a lead as large as nine points at 46-37 with 4:13 left in the game.

Adrian got their deficit down to 50-46 with 45 seconds left on a Corri Helldobler lay-up. However Saint Mary’s hit six of their eight foul shots down the stretch to seal the win.

Alison Kessler led the Belles once again scoring 16 points while tying her career high with nine rebounds and dishing off a career best seven assists in 39 minutes of action. Bridge Lipke tossed in 14 to aid the Belles effort.

Helldobler had a team best eight points to pace the Bulldogs efforts.
