Carthage Able to Hold off Saint Mary's Charge

KENOSHA, WI – Carthage was able to provide just enough offense and turned back a second half run by Saint Mary’s to post a 63-61 win Monday evening in Kenosha, WI.

With the win Carthage ups its record to 3-2 while the Belles fall to 1-6. Four of those six losses for Saint Mary’s have come by a combined 12 points.

In the opening half the Lady Reds held a lead as large as 21 points before taking a 38-25 left at the intermission. During the second 20 minutes the Belles chipped away an eventually took a 51-50 lead with 8:11 left in the contest. It was the last lead of the night for Saint Mary’s.

Carthage responded with a 10-1 scoring spree as they took a 60-52 edge with 4:27 remaining. However the Belles responded with eight consecutive points to draw within one point at 60-59 with just over a minute remaining.

With 38 seconds left, a Carlie Janowiak basket gave the Lady Reds a 62-59 lead. On the Belles ensuing possession, Alison Kessler missed a three-pointer and Anna Kammrath missed a lay-up. Janowiak proceeded to hit one of two foul shots with 17 seconds left on Carthage’s possession giving them a 63-59. Bridget Lipke scored on a lay-up and was fouled with eight seconds left to give the Belles once last chance at 63-61. Lipke couldn’t convert on the foul shot.

On the Lady Reds final possession, Katie Jarger missed on a one-and-one foul shooting situation with six seconds left. Lipke had a chance at the buzzer to send it to overtime but couldn’t connect on her jumper.

Kessler had a game high 18 points on the strength of 11-of-13 shooting from the foul line. Lipke chipped in 13 while Katie Rashid (11) and Kammrath (10) also posted double figure scoring efforts.
