Manchester Holds Off Saint Mary’s, 56-53

Box Score

NOTRE DAME, IN – Manchester held off a pesky Saint Mary’s squad 56-53 Tuesday evening in non-conference women’s basketball action from Angela Athletic Center.

The win lifts Manchester’s record to 2-1 while the Belles fall to 1-3.

In the opening frame, the Spartans trailed for just 1:22 but never held a lead larger than six points in taking a 36-30 edge heading into the locker room.

The second half was much the same as Manchester held a lead through out most of final 20 minutes. However the Belles did take a 42-40 lead with 13:13 left in the contest. The Spartans responded with a 14-6 run and held a 54-48 lead with 4:33 remaining.

Saint Mary’s got their deficit down to one point at 54-53 on a Bridget Lipke jumper with 1:26 remaining. Manchester turned the ball over on their next possession but the Belles turned it back over with 44 seconds left in the game.

After Sarah Conwell missed a three-pointer with 14 seconds left, the Belles had one last chance but Alison Kessler’s jumper fell short and Manchester grabbed the rebound and Stacey Wendel proceeded to hit two foul shots to seal the win.

Kessler had a game high 12 points to pace the Saint Mary’s effort. Erin Newsom (11) and Lipke (10) rounded out the double figures scorers for the Belles.

Kelley Meiklejohn had a team high 11 points for the Spartans.
