BELLES 2007

After not winning the MIAA Championship for the first time in five years, the Belles return a host of players who will look to bring the league title back to Saint Mary’s.

Last year’s squad didn’t feature one senior and this season’s team has just one four-year player. With all this younger talent expect the 2007 edition of Belles squad to be among the league’s best once again.

“Although we are a young team, there is no reason to think that we can’t be among the top teams in the league once again,” sixth year head coach Mark Hamilton said. “There is a lot of talent on this team to not only to be successful in the MIAA but also the nation.”

The Belles top returnee is Katie O’Brien who fought through a few ailments during the fall season but still managed to shoot four rounds in the 80’s in posting an 87.3 stroke average during six competitive rounds. During the 2005 season, she garnered Second-Team MIAA honors in helping Saint Mary’s to the league title.

“Katie has the experience and skill necessary to help us get back to the top. She knows what it takes to win at this level and she will prove to be a valuable asset for this team in a variety of ways,” Hamilton said.

A trio of returning players will also compete to be among the squad top scorers this season. Meredith Fantom was a consistent performer by shooting five rounds in the low 90’s in the fall before the junior fired six rounds in the 90’s during the spring. Perri Hamma averaged rounds in the 90’s as well and will look to improve those numbers during their second year on the squad.

“Overall we are going to be a much improved squad from last season,” Hamilton said. “I really believe that this team will once again be the toast of the league.”
