Stancukas Honored as Arthur Ashe Sports Scholar

NOTRE DAME, IN – Mary Stancukas was honored as an Arthur Ashe Sports Scholar in both soccer and swimming. She earned third-team honors in soccer while garnering first-team accolades in swimming.

The accolade was given to athletes across the nation in 17 different sports who are student-athletes of a minority background. To be included, students have to compete in an intercollegiate sport; maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.2; and be active on their campuses or in their communities. The award, which is sponsored by Diverse: Issues in Higher Education, is in the 11 th year of honoring student-athletes.

Stancukas will walk in May with a dual degree in Political Science and Biology and a 3.45 GPA. The native of Fort Worth, TX was the only MIAA athlete to be given the honor. She was also the only athlete to earn the honor in two distinctly different sports.

She was one of 54 different soccer players who were given the honor and was one of only 15 separate swimmers to earn the accolade.

During the soccer season she started in eight of the 15 games she played in at the midfield spot while scoring one goal in helping Saint Mary’s to a fourth place finish in the MIAA. As a swimmer, she swam mostly short distance in freestyle and butterfly events.

In addition to playing two sports, she is also a member of the Saint Mary’s political science club, the senior board and collegiate choir.
