BELLES 2007

With a new level of belief in place within the Saint Mary’s volleyball program, the Belles will look to build upon on the triumphs of last year and continue to push the squad’s potential to new heights of success.

After going through back-to-back losing seasons, the 2006 squad brought a level of respectability back to Saint Mary’s. They posted the most school victories since the 1999 season with 17 wins while capturing the school’s first tournament title since the mid-90’s by claiming the Thunder Invitational. In addition, they qualified for the MIAA Tournament semifinals for the first time in seven years.

“There is no doubt that last year was a memorable one,” 13th year head coach Julie Schroeder-Biek said. “We need to build on that success and let the competition know that we plan on keeping that level of success around here for a long time. To do that, it starts with this year’s squad.”

The biggest holes to fill will be replacing the voids left by the graduation of All-Conference performers, outside hitter Kristen Playko and libero Anne Cusack. With reigning Freshman of the Year Lorna Slupczynski returning the Belles will have a solid option at one of the outside hitter spots. Last year Slupczynski was second on the team with 299 kills and third with 340 digs.

“Lorna had a spectacular year in 2006 and we expect much of the same from her again this year. It won’t be easy filling the spots that Kristen and Anne left but we still have a solid core of players who know what it takes to win,” Schroeder-Biek said.

Also returning will be setter Amanda David who averaged 10.39 assists a game during her second full season at that position. Her average was the second best mark in the MIAA. David will be setting two experienced players in the middle as both juniors Cathy Kurczak (2.44 k/game) and Kaela Hellmann (1.94 k/game) return. Last season the duo combined to produce 447 total kills from the middle.

Marisa Gross is the final returnee who played in over 100 games last year. As a defensive specialist in 2006 she averaged 2.36 digs a game and serves as a strong, positive leader on the court.

“More than anything else I want this team to believe in themselves. They have great character and they have the ability to keep this program among the top teams in this league and the region,” Schroeder-Biek said. “If each player reaches her potential, it will be another successful season.”
