Incoming Students: Obtaining your Saint Mary's Network Account

Saint Mary’s College generates e-mail accounts automatically for incoming students after their deposits have been processed by Admission. (After a deposit has been paid, it takes an additional business day or two for the account to be created.)

Incoming students will be contacted by ResNet with instructions on how to retrieve their account after it has been created.

Your Saint Mary's network account will give you access to your Saint Mary's e-mail, eRezLife, online assessments for incoming students (math placement and Student Success), Blackboard, computer access in the clusters and classrooms on campus, access to network drives and other Saint Mary's network resources, and Internet access via the campus network.

You will need your Saint Mary's student ID number to obtain your account information.

Once you have obtained your Saint Mary's network account information, we recommend that you immediately change your password at http://www.saintmarys.edu/account. Please do not forget your password, since you will need it many times prior to arriving on campus.

You will need to sign into your Saint Mary's e-mail account and enable Google 2-Step Verification within 30 days of your account being created. Google 2-Step Verification is required to be enabled on all saintmarys.edu accounts for security. If Google 2-Step Verification is not enabled within 30 days, you may become locked out of your account.

If you encounter problems, please contact resnet@saintmarys.edu from another e-mail account for assistance.

Accounts for incoming students will start being created in the December prior to planned enrollment (i.e. students starting classes in August 2023 will start having accounts created in December 2022).

Please note that account creation for incoming students will be paused annually between December 10 and January 9. The ResNet Office will not be responding to e-mail when the College is officially closed for the holiday break. The exact dates for when the College is closed vary by year, but will include the days between Christmas Eve and New Year's Day.

Google Workspace for Education @ Saint Mary's College

Saint Mary's College uses Google Workspace for Education for Mail, Calendar, Contacts, and other communication and collaboration tools. For information about Google Workspace for Education at Saint Mary's College, please visit http://www.saintmarys.edu/googleapps.

All Saint Mary's Google Workspace for Education accounts are required to have Google 2-Step Verification enabled. This requirement has been in effect since Monday, April 12, 2022. If Google 2-Step Verification is not enabled on a new account within 30 days of its creation, you may become locked out of the account.

For more information about Google 2-Step Verification, please visit http://www.saintmarys.edu/resnet/google2fa.

BelleNet and DeviceNet

BelleNet refers to the secure 802.1x wireless network on campus. Access is available throughout campus, including the residence halls, academic buildings, Noble Family Dining Hall, Student Center, and Cushwa-Leighton Library.

BelleNet requires 802.1x authentication. Students can use their Saint Mary's username and password to connect their personally-owned devices (computers, smartphones, tablets) to the network. Students will also need to agree every semester to the "Responsible Use of College Computers and the Internet @ Saint Mary's College" and additional policies specific to the network available in the residence halls in order to connect.

Support for connecting to BelleNet is available for computers running macOS version 10.15 or later, Windows 10, and WIndows 11.

ResNet supports mobile devices running current versions of Apple's iOS (including iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch devices) and can assist with them connecting to BelleNet.

Google Chromebooks, Amazon's Kindle Fire, and other non-iOS tablet and mobile devices are not supported by ResNet. In most cases, tablets and other mobile devices can be successfully connected to the wireless network on campus, but at this time ResNet cannot provide any technical assistance if problems are encountered. If a device is not 802.1x-compatible, it can be registered on DeviceNet for a student to use in the residence halls.

If you would like details on how to connect your device (computer, smartphone, tablet) to BelleNet, please refer to our BelleNet Troubleshooting Tips.

If you need assistance with connecting your personal computer, smartphone, or tablet to BelleNet, please bring it to the ResNet Office and an RCC would be happy to assist you.

Saint Mary's also offers DeviceNet in the residence halls. Students can connect devices such as gaming stations, digital personal assistants, DVD/Blu-ray players, televisions, etc. to the Internet using DeviceNet.

All televisions, Apple TVs, and gaming stations (PlayStation, Xbox) must be connected via a wired connection (Ethernet, RJ45) for Internet access. Wireless network connectivity for these devices is not available in the residence halls.

For information on connecting devices without 802.1x compatibility (televisions, Blu-ray/DVD players, game consoles, personal digital assistants) to DeviceNet, please refer to our DeviceNet registration instructions.

For additional information about connecting devices to BelleNet and DeviceNet, please visit our ResNet FAQ.

Microsoft Software for Saint Mary's Students!

Saint Mary's College offers Microsoft 365 for Students for free to our students. Microsoft Office includes Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Microsoft 365 offers full versions of current Office software that can be downloaded and installed on students' personally-owned macOS and Windows computers. Versions of Office for mobile devices are also included with Microsoft 365. A Saint Mary’s student can install Microsoft 365 software on up to five personally-owned computers, tablets, and mobile devices. There are no monthly subscription fees associated with the Microsoft 365 for Students license.

Licenses for the software can be requested online by active students during orientation and when classes are in session for the academic year. Once a license has been assigned, the software can then be downloaded directly from Microsoft.

Only current Saint Mary’s students are eligible for the Microsoft 365 for Students license. The Microsoft 365 software will expire immediately after a student's active affiliation with Saint Mary’s College ends. Active student affiliation with Saint Mary’s College ends if the student leaves the College for any reason, including graduation. At expiration, the software will enter a reduced-functionality mode (files can be viewed but it will not be possible to edit or create new files) and the OneDrive associated with a student’s Saint Mary’s account will no longer be accessible or recoverable.

For more information, please refer to the Microsoft Software section of the ResNet FAQ, available here.

Phishing Scam Alert

Saint Mary's College will NEVER ask you for your password over e-mail or via a Google Form. Any messages asking for your password are NOT legitimate and should be deleted immediately. Saint Mary's Information Technology will also not send an e-mail to you regarding your account without providing detailed contact information in a signature that you can confirm via the Saint Mary's Online Phonebook (http://eureka.saintmarys.edu/phonebook).

If you receive an unexpected or suspicious e-mail without personalization, reply to the sender to verify the legitimacy of the message before you open any attachments or visit any websites mentioned in the message.

Make sure you double-check the address (URL) of any website you visit and use a password for to make sure it is the legitimate sign-in page - don't fall victim to the fake shared file scams hitting campus inboxes.

If Google detects that your e-mail account has been compromised as a result of a phishing scam, your account will be locked by Google to prevent further malicious activity and protect your personal information.

To restore access to your e-mail account, please contact ResNet for instructions on how to regain access and secure your personal information in the future.

macOS and ResNet

The majority of Saint Mary’s students (over 70%) choose to bring a Mac computer to campus. macOS and Windows computers are equally supported on campus.

ResNet supports the following versions of macOS for the 2022/2023 academic year:

    • macOS version 14 (Sonoma, to be released in Fall 2023)
    • macOS version 13 (Ventura)
    • macOS version 12 (Monterey)
    • macOS version 11 (Big Sur)

ResNet will not support Apple computers running earlier operating system versions. Students with operating systems prior to macOS version 11 on their computers will be told to upgrade to a more current version. macOS upgrades are available for free from Apple.

Windows and ResNet

ResNet supports the following versions of Microsoft Windows for the 2022/2023 academic year:

    • Windows 11 Pro Edition
    • Windows 11 Home Edition
    • Windows 10 Pro Edition
    • Windows 10 Home Edition

ResNet will not support computers running any version of Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8. Students with these operating systems on their computers will be told to purchase an operating system upgrade.

If you chose to buy a new computer running Windows, ResNet strongly recommends purchasing a computer that already has a supported operating system installed. Computers that did not have a supported Windows operating system pre-installed that are brought to the ResNet Office average more than three hours to complete the upgrade process to be compatible with the network, and students are required to be present in the ResNet Office while their computers are being upgraded. The length of time varies by computer manufacturer, model, and availability of hardware drivers.

Chromebooks and ResNet

Google Chromebooks are not supported by ResNet, and a Chromebook will not meet a student’s academic needs at Saint Mary’s College. Chromebooks may have difficulties connecting to the network, and ResNet cannot provide any technical assistance if problems arise. Chromebooks are also unable to have most course-related software installed, including Microsoft Office and Respondus LockDown Browser.

ResNet: Frequently Asked Questions

The ResNet Office (in-person assistance) and the ResNet Helpline (phone) are not staffed during the summer and during other breaks in the academic calendar. We do respond to e-mails sent to resnet@saintmarys.edu year round, but we appreciate your understanding that response times may be longer when classes are not in session.

If you have questions about connecting to BelleNet (smartphones, tablets, computers) or DeviceNet (televisions, digital personal assistants, gaming devices), using Google Workspace for Education, how to access Prism if it gives you an error, how to change your Saint Mary's password, or have other questions about using your computer, this is the place to look for the answers! These questions address concerns students have while they are both on and off campus.

    http://www.saintmarys.edu/resnet/resnetfaq/

Mobile Devices @ Saint Mary's College

Webcams @ Saint Mary's College

ResNet is able to provide limited technical support to students who need assistance with their webcams. We recommend that students refer to the instructions and troubleshooting tips available for the software being used with the webcam. Google Meet, Blackboard Collaborate, Respondus LockDown Browser, Apple FaceTime, Zoom, and Microsoft Skype work successfully from ResNet.

Hardware issues related to webcams will need to be referred to the device's manufacturer for assistance.

ResNet advises that students using webcams in their residence hall rooms tell their roommates and visitors when the webcam is in use to prevent any potentially embarrassing situations.

Saint Mary's College and DMCA/Copyright Violations

Saint Mary's College receives multiple cease-and-desist letters annually from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), and other copyright holders regarding students who are downloading/sharing/serving copyrighted material (music, videos, software) on our campus.

If Information Technology is notified by a copyright holder that you are offering copyrighted materials for download without permission, your network connection at Saint Mary's College will be disabled to ensure immediate compliance with the request. You will be contacted by Student Affairs regarding the situation. Your network connection will only be re-enabled after authorization is given by Student Affairs to Information Technology. (https://www.saintmarys.edu/it/policies)

If subpoenaed, the College is required to provide your personal information to the copyright holder for the copyright holder to take possible legal action against you. Penalties for violating copyright law could range as high as $250,000 and five years in prison and/or up to $150,000 per copyrighted work distributed without permission. For more information, please refer to the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), a 1998 United States copyright law.

Malicious Software and Computer Viruses!

Saint Mary's College provides all faculty, staff, and students with Bitdefender security software for installation on personally-owned computers. If a computer within ResNet is spreading malware (viruses or other unwanted/malicious software) over the network, it will be disconnected from the campus network until the infection has been removed and Information Technology staff have verified that the problems caused by the infection have been resolved. For more information on malicious software and instructions on how to install the Bitdefender security software on your computer, visit http://www.saintmarys.edu/virus.

Instructions for how to remove viruses and other malicious software from your personal computer can be found on the ResNet FAQ site.
