Saint Mary's Rallies Past Kalamazoo

NOTRE DAME, IN – With Kalamazoo up 2-1, the Saint Mary’s volleyball team rallied to post a 3-2 (28-30, 30-22, 20-30, 30-26, 15-11) MIAA victory over the Hornets Friday evening.

The win lifts the Belles record to 6-7 overall and 3-3 in league play while Kalamazoo falls to 3-7 and 2-4 respectively.

After splitting the first two games of the match, the Hornets seemingly took control of the contest by cruising to victory in game three. In game four, Kalamazoo held a 21-16 lead but the Belles went on an 8-1 scoring spurt in taking a 24-22 edge. Game four feature three more ties down the stretch but Kalamazoo couldn’t take the lead as the Belles scored the last fours points of the game in forcing a decisive fifth game.

A kill by Jacee Watson gave the Belles their first lead in the fifth game at 3-2 and they never trailed the rest of the way as they knocked off the Hornets for the fifth consecutive match.

Saint Mary’s had four different players post double-double efforts in the win. Lorna Slupczynski had a match high 22 kills to go along with her 11 digs. Kaela Hellman posted a team best 25 digs in addition to her 11 kills. Andrea Sasgen (12 kills, 15 digs) and Amanda David (64 assists, 12 digs) notched the statistical milestone in the win.

Bridget Blough had a team high 20 kills for Kalamazoo. Laura Winkler and Anna Lau led the Hornets back row effort with 28 and 24 digs respectively.
