NOTRE DAME, IN – In Saturday’s volleyball triangular, Saint Mary’s lost to Tri-State 3-0 (30-20, 30-26, 30-27) in the first match of the day and later dropped a hearting breaking five-game match to Bethel 3-2 (30-24, 25-30, 28-30, 30-27, 15-8).

Bethel knocked off Tri-State in the three-team, one-day event 3-0 (30-25, 30-23, 30-27) in the second match of the day.

Saint Mary’s record now stands at 6-10 overall and 3-5 in MIAA play.

In the MIAA match against Tri-State (6-11, 5-3 MIAA), Tia Roberts had a match high 18 kills along with 13 digs to pace the Tri-State attack in the three game win. Sallie Richardson posted 21 digs from the Libero position for the Thunder. For the Belles, Cathy Kurczak had a team best 14 kills and a .367 hitting percentage in the loss.

After holding a 2-1 lead against Bethel, the Belles couldn’t hold their advantage as the Pilots came back with wins in games four and five to clinch to match. Four separate Bethel (16-6) players posted at least 10 kills with Stephanie Harwood’s 25 leading the way. Harwood also tallied a match high 30 digs for Bethel.

Saint Mary’s got an 18-kill effort from Lorna Slupczynski and a 19-dig performance from Andrea Sasgen but it wasn’t enough in the defeat.
