A Resounding Symbol for Saint Mary's

For 100 years, the Le Mans Hall bell tower has stood as an iconic symbol of Saint Mary’s College. The tower has been silent until now. That changed with the installation of a 45-inch, 1,800-pound bronze bell forged in 1865. The bell rang for the first time in its new home on June 6, commemorating the public launch of the Ring Out Ring True campaign. Philanthropy Elevates the Liberal Arts at Saint Mary’s For Susan Eyerly Pichler ’61 and her husband, Joe Pichler (ND ’61), establishing an endowed chair in the humanities was a natural extension of many of those things the couple holds most dear: a shared passion for art and great books, their longtime relationship with Saint Mary’s College, and an abiding belief in the power of education to lift up students and communities. Scholarship Gift Expands the Saint Mary's Circle Lorraine Sheehan Wilson ’85 and Chris Wilson (ND ’85) recently endowed the Wilson Sheehan Scholarship Fund, the largest scholarship gift in Saint Mary’s College history. This multi-million dollar gift aligns with the Wilson Sheehan Foundation’s mission to support families and reduce poverty by creating educational opportunities. Students with demonstrated financial need will receive these scholarship funds as part of their financial aid packages, many for all four years at the College, beginning in the 2027-2028 academic year. Keeping PACE With Today’s Expectations Melainey Lowe’s academic plans appeared set when she entered Saint Mary’s College. However, as often happens when students test their early ambitions, those plans evolved. Lowe, now Director of Football Operations for the Indianapolis Colts, immersed herself in her initial major, found clarity, and ultimately shifted direction. Portrait of Possibilities Malea Schulte Richardson ’14 and her husband Aidan Richardson believe that Saint Mary’s has lived up to its promise of promoting rigorous, liberal arts academics, experiential learning, and moral and ethical formation. A decade later, the Richardson’s establishment of the Susan Vanek Experiential Learning Fund affirms and supports this promise. After a long career in finance, she continues to stay connected with her alma mater in retirement. Saint Mary’s College celebrated the dedication and ribbon-cutting of the multimillion dollar Prikkel Advising, Career, and Experience (PACE) Center, a transformative new hub for advising, career development, and experiential learning that is now open to students. The PACE Center was made possible through the extraordinary generosity of Jennifer Mathile Prikkel ’95, Patrick Prikkel, and their family. Endowed Biology Professorship Honors Pioneering Alumna Josephine “Josie” Clark-Curtiss ’68 was a woman of many firsts. Her career spanned five decades of tireless work to combat the spread of infectious disease through her pioneering discoveries in microbiology and molecular genetics research. Recently, her husband, Dr. Roy Curtiss III established the Dr. Josephine Clark-Curtiss Endowed Professorship in Biology, along with funds for student researchers, in his late wife's honor. Associate Professor of Biology Calli Davison Versagli '09 accepted the inaugural appointment this fall. Language and Literacy Lab Opens in Havican Hall In September, Saint Mary's College dedicated the Language and Literacy Lab in Havican Hall, made possible by a generous donation from alumna Susan Scherer Calandra '72. The goal of the lab, according to Susan Olney Latham '91, associate professor of speech-language pathology, is to give children chances to interact with and learn from literature. The lab includes five instructional areas designed to engage children through reading, dramatic play, story time, writing, and art. “I can’t think of a better place than Saint Mary’s for this language and literacy lab to be born. Saint Mary’s excels at creating environments that nurture discovery," said Calandra.
