Losing My Student Ziqi Zhang '15 (The Observer)

Alice Yang, assistant director of global education in the Center for Women's Intercultural Leadership (CWIL), wrote a heartfelt opinion piece for the student newspaper about the recent death of sophomore Ziqi Zhang '15. Ziqi was an international student from China majoring in math and working towards an engineering degree at Notre Dame. She was killed when a car struck her bicycle outside the entrance to the College.

Alice knew Ziqi well and worked more closely with Ziqi's family than anyone here, in part because she speaks Chinese. She writes: "Ziqi’s life was short, but she had built a beautiful bridge. She came to America from China to study abroad and pursue dual degrees of Saint Mary’s College and the University of Notre Dame. Most of her life in the United States was spent on the way back and forth between the two institutions. Her life also ended on the road between the two. May she rest in peace in Heaven!"

The Memorial Fund for Ziqi Zhang, which will help her parents in China remains open. Contributions may be made to Ziqi's family, c/o Karen Johnson, Vice President for Student Affairs, Saint Mary's College, 175 Le Mans Hall, Notre Dame, IN 46556. If you write a check, please make it payable to Saint Mary's College and indicate in the memo line that the check is for the Ziqi Zhang family.
