Belles Split Decisions in Ohio

LIMA and DAYTON, Ohio - The Saint Mary's tennis team lost a 9-0 match against Ohio Northern before taking a 9-0 win against Wittenberg on Saturday.

In the opening match of the day against Ohio Northern, Andrea Fetters, Shannon Elliott, and Kelsey Kopf all played tight matches in singles play. Fetters was on the short side of a 6-4, 7-5 (7-5) decision at two singles.

Elliott and Kopf each forced a third set tiebreaker after coming back to win their second sets. Elliott had an impressive 6-4 win in the second set after falling 6-0 in the opener, but her Ohio Northern counterpart edged her out by the minimum of two points at 10-8 in the tiebreaker.

Kopf, meanwhile, earned a decisive 6-1 second set win after a 6-4 loss in the opening set. The freshman was also narrowly beaten out in the tiebreaker after falling by the same 10-8 margin in the super tiebreaker.

In the second match of the day, the Belles were dominant against Wittenberg. Shannon Elliott and Andrea Fetters teamed up for an 8-0 number two doubles win, and Kaity Venters and Rina Moore matched that same result at three doubles. Kayle Sexton and Sam Setterblad, meanwhile, were 8-2 winners at one doubles for the Belles.

Elliott, Jackie Kjolhede, and Maddie Minaudo did not drop a game on their way to 6-0, 6-0 singles wins at the three, four, and six flights for Saint Mary's. Bailey Oppman claimed a 6-2, 6-0 win at five singles.

Andrea Fetters staved off a comeback attempt by her Wittenberg counterpart on her way to a 6-3, 7-5 win at one singles. Kayle Sexton, meanwhile, was a 6-4, 6-2 winner at two singles for the Belles on the night.

The tennis team is back in action next Saturday, February 28 when they travel to Hope for their conference opener starting at 1:00 p.m.
