Remarks

James Rogers, Lecturer in Business and Economics and
2019 Maria Pieta Faculty Award for Teaching Excellence Winner

Belle yes! You, the Saint Mary’s Class of 2020, have made it!

The energy of Saint Mary’s empowered women is incredible. You are all genuinely awe inspiring in your own way.

As a rule as a marketing guy, I am frequently expected to say a lot. You know, words like sale, free, hurry, new, and the most magic word of all…BOGO. Well, not today.

I’m reminded of what my mentor, whose wife served as an officer in the Marines, once asked me rhetorically, “What do you say to a room full of women who outrank you?” His answer, “Very little, but you’d better listen carefully.”

In this spirit, my remarks will be brief on this important occasion celebrating female empowerment, though in a very unconventional way due the situation we all are experiencing.

Belles, you are the living, breathing core competency of Saint Mary’s College. You are strong, knowledgeable, reflective, capable, creative, self-aware, inspired, community focused, and fully empowered women. You are poised on the cusp of taking on the dreams and challenges of your generation and beyond. You are what our society craves.

You are the powerful feminine voice to create balance in our society and all of its callings.  You are the embodiment of the truest form of feminism: asserting yourselves as women in your chosen avenue and every walk of life where you have earned and deserve the respect of friends, family, partners and associates alike.

Your empowerment is the beginning of a journey promised to you from day one at Saint Mary’s College; the discovery Sister Madeleva Wolff foretold is before you now. You are entering a world demanding critical thinking, resolute decisions, as well as inclusive, creative, and credible solutions to a host of global problems of mind, body, spirit, and community . . . even if you choose to address these challenges and opportunities one simple action or one person at a time. Know this, just as in that iconic World War II poster of Rosie the Riveter . . . you can do it.

The newly minted reins of power are now in your hands. Your education at Saint Mary’s has taught you vital lessons on how to put your power into practice. Chief among those lessons is an understanding that being satisfied with cosmetic, transitory or frivolous changes are not your mission. The power you possess gives you the rare and highly responsible opportunity to make visionary and enduring systemic changes for the better. I implore you, embrace your power.

This is what Saint Mary’s has prepared you to do. The world awaits. Let it benefit from your power as a Saint Mary’s College educated woman. Show the world what Belles can do.

In closing, I offer you my congratulations, again. And most of all, to the empowered women of the Class of 2020 . . . Belle yes!

The Bridge at Lake Marian
