Patricia Arch Green Award

The Patricia Arch Green Award is awarded annually to a College Academy of Tutoring (CAT) student with exemplary service in the CAT program in her role as a Teacher's Assistant, an after-school tutor, or her general commitment to the program and mission. The award winner must also demonstrate leadership, initiative, and the ability to motivate and inspire others.

Patricia Arch Green (1939 - 2004) graduated from Saint Mary's College in 1961 with an elementary education degree. Patricia lived a life dedicated to serving others and believed in teaching by example. She and her husband Richard, always taught their children to value community service and would often include them in their volunteer activities in their community.

Shelby Cornett '13 is the 2012-2013 Patricia Arch Green Award recipient due to her outstanding dedication to the CAT Program and CAT activities. Shelby became involved with the CAT Program in her sophomore year as a CAT Scholar, working in the classrooms as a teacher’s assistant and after school with third and fourth graders as a tutor. Even after completing over 600 hours of service as a CAT Scholar, Shelby returned to the CAT Program as a volunteer, contributing many more hours as a teacher’s assistant, after-school tutor, and pen pal. She has also been involved with many other service projects and events, such as the blood drives, service events at Dismas House, 12 Days of Christmas, Rebuilding Together, and Dr. Seuss Night.  For the past two years, Shelby has gone above and beyond to help plan activities for after-school tutoring.  She and a few other girls have been creating new and exciting games and activities to enhance the children’s skills in reading and math.  They have worked closely with Coquillard to ensure these activities have mirrored and reinforced what the students are learning in their classes.

Shelby has been an inspiration not only to the children with whom she works, but to her fellow Saint Mary’s students as well.  Says one student, "Shelby's passion for teaching has made all the difference in the children's lives. Her creativity and dedication to the program have instilled a desire for learning outside of the classroom in many of her students. I have personally witnessed this at Coquillard and her efforts are making all the difference for new leaders to follow. Shelby truly leads by example."

Shelby’s creativity, energy, and generosity have been incredible assets to the CAT Program over her four years of involvement.  We wish her the best of luck in all her future endeavors.  Shelby, you are an inspiration to all who have the privilege of working with you.
